As the year wraps up for us at the workshop, we had our end of year party/lunch today. Games of petanque, drinks, a BBQ and lovely pavlova dessert under the gingko tree made for a very pleasant afternoon. We only have 3-4 days before we […]
Owen’s water wheel project has been progressing well. I am sure you don’t appreciate how much of a relief this is, however, without a new water wheel we will soon run out of water for cups of tea at morning break. Truly a grave situation! […]
For a time of the year when one might expect things to be a little quieter, we have been going flat out. In amongst shipping wheels to lots of lucky Christmas present receivers, I have been able to get a bit of time on some of our other projects, including that BIG one mentioned on Ravelry :-).
Well, the parts I completed the tech drawing for have returned and we are excited that they appear to have turned out even better than we had hoped. I must admit I get goosebumps each time I go down and look at them on the wheel in the workshop. We are in the process of building two new revision prototypes (Beta versions?) that we plan on shipping to some spinners who are looking forward to them – hopefully also for Christmas but the 24th is racing up. I would love to be able to tell you everything but I can’t sorry. In time – not too far away, we will give out some more to whet your appetite. Until then… keep guessing!
One of the things that is quite special about working at Majacraft is the enviroment. The workshop is actually Owen and Glynis’ old farm shed that we converted and hence we work on their little farm. They really enjoy trees and plants so we have […]
Hi there, I have been on bobbin duty today turning lace and jumbo bobbins. Since working at Majacraft I have had to learn wood turning which has been a fun and valuable skill. I had done a bit of metal turning both at school and […]
I thought you may have been interested in seeing some of the first prototypes of the wheels and tools we now build. While we do not have the prototypes for everything still (somehow they seem to get lost or canabilised), there are still quite a few in storage. I thought this one was “DONE” but when I put it to the others, they were not so keen on the design of the feet. It is still possible to see the evolution of where the skeiner ended up though. If you are interested in the wood, it is called ‘Pacific Hardwood’ which is actually resin injected pine. We experimented with Pacific Hardwood for quite a while as it had some great properties.
Prototype Free Standing Skeiner
I have spotted another couple of prototype wheels about so if you are interested, drop in some feedback and I will dig out the camera again.
Greetings 🙂 If you have been on the Majacraft web site recently you will probably have noticed quite a bit of activity around the release of “In a Spin”, the new book by Pat Old. We took part in the launch of her book at […]
Ha! I bet that heading caught your attention! This is indeed Dad’s next wheel project but maybe not what you were expecting. When Rob and I were kids, Dad built a waterwheel to pump drinking water from the stream to our house tank. I am […]
Although I suspect I might be in the blog honeymoon period at the moment, I am delighted to report that I still have plenty to share.
I have been enjoying Ravelry hugely recently. There is always something interesting being shared or taught. The people who started the Ravelry community up have done a fantastic job and I think should be very proud of what they have achieved. If you are a crafty person and have not joined Ravelry yet, what is keeping you? 🙂 There really is something for everyone, I have even managed to join the Battlestar Galatica group! PS Don’t forget to join <shameless plug>Majacraft Fans</shameless plug>
In case anybody has missed it, Christmas seems to be approaching very fast. We typically take about a month off in January to enjoy the NZ summer so I am starting to think of what to do with my family. For the last couple of years we have been camping at the beach but we may do something different this year. Of course, I want to take them with us to the camp/weekend with Lexi Boeger in February so we might get two holidays this summer. I am a Lord of the Rings fan and enjoy Wellington (where the Majacraft camp is going to be) a lot because much of the production of the movie trilogy happened in that area. What are your plans for Christmas and holiday this year if you would like to share?
On the wooded road
This is some friends and I visiting where the hobbits hid from the Nazgul on the wooded road. Yes, I confess I am a bit of a geek. However, if you come to the Majacraft Camp and it fits in the schedule then perhaps we could visit some of the locations 😉
After my period of testing and learning how WordPress works, I have released the blog out into the world. I have had another day of computering, focussed around tech drawing and sourcing new components. Any more information than this would surely be telling! Apart from […]
