SMOKY MOUNTAIN SPINNERY

I saw spinning being demonstrated about 30 years ago at a living history museum in Western kentucky and fell in love with it. After finding someone to get me started (on an antique wheel) I was off and running, or should I say spinning. I decided to purchase a new wheel and the rest is history. I demonstrated spinning at fairs and fiber gatherings and showed my registered Romneys - even having the Grand Champion Black Romney Ewe at the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival in 1996. I purchased my first new spinning wheel, a Majacraft Suzie Pro and shortly after became a dealer for Majacraft wheels. Selling fleeces and wheels and teaching spinning led me to the Great Smoky Mountains to demonstrate spinning in the Great Smoky Mountains Arts and Crafts Community.

After a few trips to the Smokies to demonstrate spinning at the Cliff Dwellers Gallery, my husband and I decided to move to the mountains. He purchased a fly fishing shop and I opened Smoky Mountain Spinnery in 2000. After starting very small and running the shop by myself for about 12 years, it had grown to the point of needing assistance. Now 17 years later Smoky Mountain Spinnery is a 3000 square foot spinning, weaving, knitting, crocheting, rug hooking, kumihimo braiding, felting and dyeing shop with a studio for classes and regular fiber gatherings. We have five part time employees who love fiber arts and sharing their love through teaching classes and assisting customers with their needs. We have regular Tuesday night Sit-n-Knit (any fiber arts), monthly Hang Out and Hook and twice monthly Spin Ins. Class schedules are on our website and Facebook. Spinning classes are scheduled one on one.
